Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: timings, navigation, tips

Opening hours
Getting there
Tips
  • Cable cars operate year-round, though high winds may pause services.
  • The first lifts often begin around 08:30 am (sometimes even 7:30am), depending on the season.
  • Best months for clear views: June–November
  • Best time of day: Morning (8–10am)

💡Pro tip: Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes in advance of your cable car ride to counter unforeseen circumstances like sudden weather changes.

  • 📍 Zermatt, 3920 Valais, Switzerland
  • Zermatt is car-free. Park in Täsch and take the shuttle (5 min).
  • Cable car valley station is a 10–15 minute walk or 5-minute electric bus ride from Zermatt station.
  • All connections are clearly marked and operate continuously throughout the day.
  • For the best Matterhorn photo, stop at Schwarzsee on the way down: Morning shadows on the peak can be harsh. Early afternoon light hits the Matterhorn’s face perfectly from Schwarzsee’s lakeside path.
  • Enter the Glacier Palace before heading to the viewing platform: Your body adjusts better to the altitude when you explore the colder, enclosed palace first — preventing lightheadedness once you step onto the exposed terrace.
  • The Ice Tunnel Floor is colder than the viewing deck: Bring an extra pair of socks if you get cold easily. The chill seeps in faster here than at the summit.
  • Sit on the left side going up from Trockener Steg: That’s your best direct line to the Matterhorn’s silhouette as the gondola crosses the glacier field.
  • Staying in Täsch? Catch a train that arrives in Zermatt before 08:30: This lets you beat the gondola rush and still enjoy optional stops without feeling pressed for time.

Frequently asked questions about Matterhorn Glacier Paradise tickets

What discount do I receive with the Swiss Travel Pass or the Swiss Half Fare Card?

With both the Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss Half Fare Card, you receive a 50% discount on the standard single and return tickets for the cable cars up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (Klein Matterhorn). You must present your valid pass when purchasing the reduced ticket or when booking online.

Is there free travel for children? What about the Junior Card?

Yes, Zermatt Bergbahnen is very child-friendly:
Bambini (Ages 3 – 8.99): Travel free of charge.
Children (Ages 9 – 15.99): Receive a 50% discount.
Junior Card: Children in this age group who possess a Junior Card or Grandchild Card (and are accompanied by a parent/grandparent with a valid ticket) travel free of charge.

Do I need to book my ticket in advance, or can I buy it on the day?

You can buy your ticket on the day of travel at the Zermatt base station. However, booking in advance (at least 4-5 days prior) is strongly recommended for two reasons:
1. Best price: You usually secure the lowest available price.
2. Queue skip: You can often bypass the ticket counter line and go directly to the turnstiles (if you have an existing KeyCard or print at home).

Are the tickets valid for a specific time, or can I go anytime on the chosen day?

Tickets are generally valid for the entire day you select. You can board any operating cable car at your leisure during the published operating hours. The only exception is if you book the Crystal Ride supplement, which may require a specific time slot for the final ascent from Trockener Steg.

Is the ticket valid for getting off and back on at intermediate stations like Furi and Schwarzsee?

Yes. A standard return ticket to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise allows you to break your journey at the intermediate stations (Furi, Schwarzsee, Trockener Steg) and re-board another operating cable car, provided you complete your round-trip within the ticket's validity period.

Which is the best day of the week to visit to avoid crowds?

Generally, Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be slightly less crowded than weekends (Friday to Sunday) or Mondays. However, the best advice remains: Start early (get on the first or second lift of the day, around 8:00am) regardless of the day of the week.

What happens if the weather is bad? Are refunds available?

If lifts stop due to strong winds or unsafe conditions, your ticket can be refunded or rebooked depending on the situation. Partial closures (like only the final leg shutting) usually allow partial refunds. Always check live status on the Zermatt Bergbahnen website before heading up.

What should I wear at 3,883 m?

Even in summer, the summit feels like winter. Expect temperatures close to 0°C. Wear a warm jacket, gloves, a beanie, sturdy shoes, and dress in layers.

Is oxygen available? What if I feel altitude sickness?

Mild symptoms (lightheadedness, short breath) are common at 3,883 m. The summit station has first-aid staff and oxygen available if needed. Descending even one station usually relieves symptoms quickly. Walk slowly, hydrate, and avoid rushing the viewpoint immediately after arrival.

Is there luggage storage at the station?

Yes. Zermatt station offers paid luggage storage/lockers, so you can leave bags before heading to the lifts. There is no large-bag storage at intermediate stations or at the summit.

Are dogs allowed on the cable cars?

Yes, dogs are welcome. They usually travel free or at a small fee depending on size. Dogs must be leashed, and certain summit areas (like the Glacier Palace) may feel too cold or slippery for them.

Is there Wi-Fi at Matterhorn Glacier Paradise?

Yes. The summit station offers free Wi-Fi so you can upload photos, check weather, or contact your group before descending.

Great value for money. With good planning one can take full advantage of the Swiss Pass. We fit in the Glazier Express, two days in Zurich, Lucerne and Zurich lake rides, Mount Rigi and much more.

Reaching an altitude of 3,883 meters was a breeze, and everything was so well organized...!! I’ll definitely recommend you to my friends and family so they can come visit! The video of the mountains, the scenery, and the wildlife... AMAZING!! I loved how easy it was to ski in June, with everything so well organized and covered!!! Congratulations!! I just think there’s one issue to resolve for those of us coming from other countries: it’s difficult to manage the lift tickets for the ascent and descent, since you have to exchange them at the ticket counters. I think it would be helpful to explain this and reassure customers who aren’t familiar with the process. You could send them via a QR code, and each customer could manage it directly. Maybe another solution is already in the works???? Best regards!!!!
